Delf Cottage

Originally conceived as three farm workers' houses, Delf fulfilled this role until a few years ago. Two thirds of the building is now the home of Julie and Tim Elmhirst. The old "No.1" remains as a separate house, and it is this which is available for guests.

Commissioned and built in the 1930's by a local farmer, the late A.O. Elmhirst, Delf Cottage was designed by International Modernist architect, Robert Hening MBE.
A.O. ('Pom') Elmhirst was the younger brother of Leonard Elmhirst, who in partnership with his wife Dorothy, established the Dartington Hall Estate and Trust near Totnes in South Devon. Robert Hening was the on-site architect for the Swiss American architect William Lescaze and was a consultant to the Trust from 1920 to 1972. Therefore, it was natural that the Yorkshire branch of the family should employ him when they needed some new buildings.
